HOW TO BREAK A SCENE INTO SHOTS

This workshop is about telling stories through moving images – it means that we will concentrate on everything that happens when our scripts, our ideas and feelings are being transformed into images, shots and scenes of our films.

This workshop programme starts with simple things concerning space, shots and images. Then it deals with characters and relationship between them and at the end of the workshop we will concentrate on the narrative.

In the first part of the workshop we will talk about the special task of film beginnings and analyze examples. The second part will be about communication with the audience (The Deal with the audience). Why and how we need to communicate with the audience ( Breakdown, how to break a scene in to shots). This will be explained in the analysis of key scenes.

Hagen Keller

Hagen Keller

Hagen Keller graduated in directing and screenwriting at the “Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film” in Munich. Visual storytelling was and is the main focus of his work as a director, dramaturge and lecturer. As founder and shareholder of “ostlicht Filmproduktion” he supervised and realized national and international feature films.

Hagen Keller has been teaching film visual storytelling at various universities for more than 20 years. In addition to his work as a freelance director, dramaturge and lecturer, Hagen Keller has been overseeing film and series concepts of Philip Koch’s “Nocturna Filmproduktion” (director of Tribes of Europe, Picco) in development, dramaturgical consulting and implementation for various streaming services since 2022.

Summer School of the University of Television and Film Munich

1. Participation and Registration

The HFF Munich Summer School is open in principle to anyone who submits a complete registration within the published deadline, meets any workshop-specific requirements set out as binding in the relevant workshop description, and pays the course fee on time.

Late or incomplete registrations will not be considered.

Places are limited and will be allocated in the order in which complete registrations are received, provided that the number of registrations does not exceed the number of available places. There is no legal entitlement to a place on a workshop.

2. Admission and Binding Registration

Once you receive confirmation of your place, your registration becomes binding and forms a contract between you and HFF.

3. Course Fee and Payment Deadlines

The course fee is set out in the relevant workshop description.

The course fee is due as follows, and you must be able to provide proof of payment:

for the workshop “Script in 23 Days”: by July 13, 2026 at the latest;

for all other workshops: by August 17 2026 at the latest.

What counts for meeting the deadline is when the payment arrives in the account specified by HFF, not when it is sent. It is the participant’s responsibility to provide proof of timely payment.

If payment is not received on time, HFF is entitled to cancel the contract and offer the place to someone else.

4. Cancellation by Participants

You may cancel your participation free of charge up until the relevant payment deadline set out in Section 3. The cancellation must be sent in good time by email to info@hff-summerschool.de.

After the relevant payment deadline has passed, cancellation is no longer free of charge, and the full course fee remains payable.

5. Cancellation and Changes by the Organiser

HFF reserves the right to cancel or postpone individual workshops if there are too few participants, if instructors are unavailable, or for other important reasons.

If HFF cancels a workshop, any course fee already paid will be refunded in full.
Minor changes to the programme, the instructors, or the venue are considered reasonable, provided they do not substantially alter the overall character of the workshop.

6. Data Protection

Personal data is processed in accordance with the applicable data protection laws, in particular the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Bavarian Data Protection Act (BayDSG). Further information on how personal data is processed can be found here under the Summer School section.
